Unexpected Discovery Brings Hope
A family from Texas received a life changing phone call when their missing dog was discovered nearly two years after she disappeared. The Miniature Schnauzer named Koko was spotted wandering near a shopping complex in Clark, New Jersey, more than 1,000 miles from her hometown of Glenn Heights.
On March 4, a concerned passerby noticed the small dog roaming around the Clark Commons Shopping Center and alerted local police. Patrolman Nick Kurus quickly responded and safely brought Koko to the police headquarters.

Police Efforts Lead to a Breakthrough
Officers began searching for clues to identify the dog’s owner. During their efforts, they located information connected to a pet finder service. This helped them trace the contact details of Koko’s last registered family.
When the officer reached out, the dog’s owners were stunned and emotional. They explained that Koko had gone missing two years earlier in Texas and they never expected to hear about her again.
Caring Hearts at the Police Department
While the family prepared to travel to New Jersey, Koko stayed with the police department instead of being placed in a shelter. Officers took turns caring for her over the next three days.
They ensured she was comfortable and well looked after. Koko was bathed, fed nutritious meals, taken for walks, and given warm blankets and toys. Several officers even purchased supplies with their own money to make her stay pleasant.
Police Director Patrick Grady later shared that many staff members were dog lovers and were determined to keep her safe and happy until her family arrived.
An Emotional Reunion After a Long Journey
On March 7, the long wait finally ended. Koko’s owners arrived in New Jersey and the reunion was filled with tears and joy. Witnesses described how the dog immediately ran straight to her owner, creating a deeply touching moment for everyone present.
The grateful family thanked the police department for their kindness and dedication. Koko’s incredible journey ended with love, relief, and a reminder that hope should never be lost.
